| Tang Soo Do Style
Tang Soo Do ("Way of the Open Hand") is a classic martial art which integrates the graceful movements of Northern Chinese martial arts with the sharper techniques of Japanese karate and the centuries-old Korean Soo Bahk ("hand strike") and Tae Kyun ("foot style"). Unlike Tae Kwan Do which focuses heavily on kicking techniques and uses the hands defensively, Tang Soo Do places emphasis on complete development of hand and foot techniques.
Tang Soo Do is a “living art” and includes a large variety of self defense training. (See Curriculum)
Tang Soo Do Philosophy
Tang Soo Do is an “action oriented” martial art which follows the “Moo Do”, the way of the warrior. Thus, in TSD one first learns by doing. Later, one gains understanding.
Central to the TSD philosophy is the Song of the Sip-Sam Seh, which, among other things, teaches the use of the “waist.” This connection to the waist or hip movement in combination with Shin-Chook (tension-relaxation) or “stillness in motion” provides power, focus and coordination to TSD movements, which allows leveraging one’s full strength, mass and energy into each technique. For a better understanding you’ll simply have to take action – come to class.
